My First Name is my Last Name

  • the chinese are people who believe the family should always come first, ahead of the self, thus calling the family name as our last name is almost unthinkable. traditionally, the family name have always come ahead of the given name when giving the full name.
  • however, it is also commonplace to see chinese surnames being "moved to the back" in a foreign context. eg. i watched the movie memoirs of a geisha on television recently and when its time for the credit roll at the end of it, i saw "ZIYI ZHANG". but it was "GONG LI", and not "LI GONG", that followed next.
